When I connected with Charlie right after my race he said “mom, you might be disappointed with 35th, but I am SO proud of you for doing your best”. Truths from a 10 year old!
He’s right and I earned that my finish line smile that day on the gruelling course in Paris. As I crawled up the 14% hill cursing my legs that felt like bricks I thought of my people at the finish line and what they would say “all you can ask of yourself is the best in the moment”. I came to the race fit, healthy, happy and supported - it tested me and I answered. Process is more important than the result.
I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada over two decades and to be the oldest finisher in the field. The marathon is a test of so much, and every finish is a success. Being able to share it with everyone both on course and cheering from home was so special, so thank you everyone I heard you loud and clear!

It’s been 40 years since the first women’s marathon at the Olympics and that long since I fell in love with running.
1984 - when I began to race my sister @jeanettibenetti to bed, inspired by @joanbenoitsamuelson. Thanks Jet for being my first and best competitor!
I was the age my son is now when I started running track for my elementary school. Wow.
30 years since coach Mike took me under his wing with the promise to help me be the best I could be. And he was in Tokyo as a team coach and will be at the finish line on Sunday too. I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated mentor and friend, always there when I need him.
It’s been 20 years since my Dad cried with me when we achieved my dream of making the Olympics, back when I was a 1500m runner. Then 17 years later, Tokyo.
There have been highs of highs and lows of lows but here we are, in Paris with my heart full of gratitude and appreciation for everyone who helped me get here. And I can’t wait to see my friends and family who came to Paris to be part of this epic experience! Thanks for being here for me!
My deepest affection and gratitude to @grahamthehood for being the best partner, coach and Dad to our kids - if I win a medal he deserves at least half (good thing we like sharing!).
My parents continue to be my pillars of support and invaluable in helping us with the kids so we can make it all work. (I am sure they wonder if I will ever retire!).
After so many years I have so many people to thank for being part of the team - this round shout out to physio @wavephysio, S&C @okanaganpeakperformance, and my formidable training partner over the last 3 years @jo_brown1. I also send love to @tashawodak for inspiring me with her fierceness and graciousness - I wish she was here.
To my Charlie and Oliver - who will be waiting at the finish line - you are everything.
To @saucony - thanks for believing in me as a masters and for the fastest shoes out there!!
Going into “social media lockdown” tonight so will see you on the flip side.
I feel all the love and cheers loud and clear - thank you!!!!

12 weeks of training summarized in 40 seconds!
✅ highest average mileage ever
✅ all-time best workouts
✅ biggest elevation runs
✅ consistent strength gains in weight room
✅ no illness / injuries
✅ fun with friends
✅ immense gratitude to my support team
✅ heart full of love
So I guess that’s all I can ask for one week out from the Paris Olympic Games!
Tomorrow Barcelona 🔜 Olympic Village!

Hills pay the bills.
Right??!!!
The Paris Olympic race is only 5.5 weeks away! And it’s gonna be SO hilly (and hot and humid - bring it ALL on!)
We moved away from classic marathon prep to hilly tempos and long runs over changing terrain (this run was 35 km with 450 m elevation gain in the middle 22km at “marathon effort”). Good thing there is no shortage of terrain in the Okanagan 😆
The cool thing is that when I go back down to flat workouts, my legs are just as fast as they are during traditional marathon workouts. Fitness is starting to click and I am starting to get excited to line up against the best runners in the world 🌎 on Aug 11 (Aug 10th in North America).

What an honour it has been to be part of this project celebrating women's marathoning in CBC's "Running a Revolution" which will air later this summer. After the Canadian 10k championship I had the opportunity to pop down to Boston and visit the great people at @saucony headquarters. We got to use some great new motion capture technology while testing out the latest and greatest race shoes (which I’ll be wearing in Paris). Such a fun/cool experience!
If you pay close attention you’ll catch a glimpse of me wearing them at the Canadian Half Marathon championship this weekend in Winnipeg! One last race then it’s back to the last big block of work before the big dance! It’s starting to get real!

What a beautiful place to do a 37 km long run with some (20km) progression. Thankfully @tashawodak agrees! Love the opportunity to train and race together - inspiring us to be our best and have fun in the process!

Long run with work is the bread and butter of marathon training. Some days it comes easily and other days it doesn’t. Half way through my tempo, uphill, into the wind, I wanted to stop. But I didn’t. I worked hard to shift my mindset and focus on “working hard” but not “forcing it”. And guess what? It worked.
Lots more work to do, but I take it as one long run, one workout, one recovery run, one gym workout at a time.
10 weeks to go until til the Olympic marathon!

Eyes to Paris 2024.
After experimenting with more miles, hills and weights this winter to prepare for a hilly and challenging Paris course, my hamstring tendinopathy reared its ugly head again and told me to back off. I listened, so here we are, running my favourite easy long runs but holding off intensity and hills until it returns to 💯 again. Thankfully (due to my easy paces shuffle 😆) easy running is no problem as I basically have no hamstring extension at this paces so I can still hit my favourite long runs.
Boston on hold for another year, all eyes towards being FIT and HEALTHY for Paris on August 11.

Next trip to Paris will involve sightseeing at marathon pace! Taking the opportunity to check out the course and sights to prepare for the big day August 11th…going to be a hard course!!! Bring it :)
